What do you need from a diving camera?

I’ve been using Paralenz camera for a couple of years and have been impressed with the robustness, reliability and functionality of the camera. I do a lot of broadcast work and often use the Paralenz as a b-roll camera and it’s sizeoffers unparalleled POV performance in the diving environment. Whether you’re in the shallows using natural light and the incredible DCC function or in deeper water using artificial light the camera captures clean images and good colour balance and depth.

Hand held, in your pocket or attached to a large camera rig this little camera goes everywhere with me!

Great little camera! The 4K looks great and the depth overlay is great when looking back at dive sites. I would recommend this over GoPro for divers…

This is a fantastic camera. Compact easy to use. The best part of the camera is the video it takes. No filters, stabilization and no lights needed. I love my Paralenz.

Just over 12 months ago I met a couple of Belgian guys who had linked GPS to their GoPro so you can show where they were on their ski run, well now there is a camera that records your dive profile and the depth where you recorded video or picture, including the temperature of the water, a big step forward in my view. This is a well built camera, no housing required and the App & firmware are regularly being updated. The DCC software works extremely well on 4 recent dives in the Azores, very impressive. There is excellent support via the website and should your query not be there then the team get back with a response really quickly. Like any new piece of kit, I would recommend trying the functions above water, eg taking a snap is a quick flick of the switch.
The App works well, although the ipad version is still a little crushed, and you can locate your dive site, but I have not been too successful with this bit yet. I would recommend this over a gopro or other action cam to take on your dive without hesitation.

So far, I have had a relatively good experience with the camera. I tried the green water color correction and it did not work for me as the color became artificially too blue. When using with video lights, I do get good results. One thing to note it that the battery discharges when not in use. One of the big issue that I have with the camera is the mounting system. It is very finicky and tends to lock on one side of the groove and not the other one. It takes me a while to have it lock on both sides.

Our lake is a man made water reservoir in which viz can be as little as 5 feet at times. Took the production camera out for a first day of the year dive. Viz was about 10 feet, but little light. With no lights, no filters and no post edits, I was able to get the best footage I have ever taken in the lake. DCC is awesome. In review of the footage, I saw elements that I did not see with my naked eyes, including some fish hiding in one of the Christmas trees, the doll riding the dog skeleton (don’t ask) had a red bathing suit and all (the few I could find) the fish looked so natural in color and tone. This is my new favorite camera. Just waiting for a LCD monitor and life will be grand! The app is cool for setting up the camera and the log feature a novelty (cool, but not something I will use much). For me, it is all about the footage and this camera produces.

I’m part of the A-testers group since the beginning with this product. Got my tester unit just in time for my Maldives trip; everybody in awe with the cam. And now that I already got my production unit; its working even better, couldn’t be happier with the quality of the product; from the build til the phone app, everything is awesome. I just couldn’t stop showing around my unit with my dive buddies who just keep on feeling jealous and trying their utmost best to get ahold of the unit. Keep up the great work guys, and look forward to future improvement. Cheerrrsssss…..

The camera still have some issues, but every time I contact with the support team they respond very quickly and solve the problem perfectly.

This is an absolute must have for any diver, whether amateur, tech, or professional. It can also be used with confidence for other water sports, even with thick gloves on.. it is rated to 200m out the box with no need for additional casings.
This is a real rugged design, with easy to use functions.
The transition from any other camera to the Paralenz camera is seamless, and simple. Finally a product for divers that’s designed by divers and actually works.
It can be used in all varying light condition, and has a unique digital colour changing ability without the use of filters.
The camera, the functions and the app, all make this a priority in a divers kit bag. I found that I now save around 6 to 7 kg of my baggage allowance as I am not taking loads of different camera bits and accessories.
An award winning camera that I reckon is a 5*plus rating.

In the action camera and diving markets, I think the Paralenz will certainly make a breakthrough. Here’s why: I’ve shot underwater footage on a range of cameras, from GoPro to Sealife to RED. For situations in which a small, compact camera would be the best, I will now always choose the Paralenz camera. Not only is the camera fully automated for recording and color correction, easy to use with gloves, and simple to learn, it actually has great low light capabilities and dynamic range compared to similarly sized cameras. In the water without lights, the color preservation is pretty good. I think the DCCC needs a little tweaking (sometimes it over-warms the image), but if you’re up for some basic color editing, you’ll end up with a much better looking image compared to the footage from other action cameras. As a topside camera, this camera is sharp and still easy to use. The variety of mounts available give you just as much flexibility as GoPros when it comes to strapping, suctioning, or gripping the camera to any surface. I recently shot a series of topside video timelapses with the Paralenz, and side-by-side with GoPro, the Paralenz had noticeably better color balance, sharpness, and dynamic range.

The only thing I’m missing from this camera is a viewing monitor. Once a viewing monitor is released, I really can’t think of a reason I would use any other action camera underwater. Even topside, I’m already favoring the Paralenz over my GoPros.

Paralenz is simple to use, don’t even know its there. The colour correction is great. Gotta figure out lighting for wreck penetration, etc.
The waterproof thread could maybe do with lengthening as I had a flooding issue and support was great. Replaced camera no questions.
All up the best underwater camera I’ve used

    12. Rated 5 out of 5

This camera it’s awesome, I use every day and in multiple different ways. I do freediving and with the auto-record I don’t need to think about the camera in my pre breathing so I can relax, and only focus on my dive. This also is said about when I am with students, the camera starts recording just as a Dive watch.
As A techincal diver using open circuit or CCR rebreather it’s a wonderful camera because I don’t need to think about the depth I am at and fear of my camera flooding. I also don’t have to worry about changing the filter at a deeper depth as I do with other camera and housings (Paralenz Depth color correction filter is integrated!)
With Paralenz I don’t notice the camera on my helmet and if needed I can attach to my mask which is awesome!

Now one camera has everything you need for diving.

Being a diver already for several years and a passionate person about underwater marine life non-professional video capture, I really pointed my curiosity on the Paralenz project when I saw it firstly announced around 2 years ago. During this time I was following closely all the news around this development project until I´ve considered it mature and decided to acquire my own unit around 3 months ago. The expectation was high, and today after already several dives with my Paralenz camera in the Portuguese Atlantic coast line, I´m really satisfied with the flexibility and good quality of my Paralenz camera this together with the all the support materials and information available to properly operate it (Youtube videos ,Technical documentation, recommendations etc). At every dive with it, at any moment you need to operate it, it comes to my mind the expression phrase “… camera built by divers, for divers!”

My camera came in with fluid in the lens assembly. Despite this, I found the images and video sharp. Just as importantly, the uncomplicated controls and small size enabled close approaches and optimum video time. The downside? Software interface was useless, and I wish there was a stuck with remote controls. Paralenz quickly replaced the camera, abd I am looking forward to my upcoming trip to Thailand! Great product, even though it remains incomplete in some ways.

Love my Paralenz, so much better than my other action cameras. The quality of pics and knowing I don’t have to worry about having filters is great. Had a couple issues when I first started with it but the support crew helped me get them fixed. Battery life and SD capacity is excellent. Love the ability for the Depth & Temperature overlay and the Slo-Motion video is really nice to be able to do without extra editing software. Can’t wait for the company to bring out some more of their ideas for the camera.

I waited quite a few months for the camera, but in the end it was definitely worth the wait. I have only had it for about 3 months and I’ve got to say that I am extremely impressed the camera up to now. So much so, my GOPRO has never been used since and is now gathering dust.
I have only been diving and making under water videos for a couple of years but the Paralenz is the best video camera I have used up to now. The footage quality is excellent in the UK’s low light conditions ( that I normally dive in ), the fact that it needs no housing is also a massive plus as the sound quality is so much better without the clunks and clicks caused by the housing on other cameras. The DCC is amazing since the last firmware update, it’s great not having to use a filter, as I have had many videos ruined by a floaty filter in front of the camera lens.
I have also found Paralenz Customer Support to be very responsive and helpful with any issues, which I think is very important, especially with such a new product .
Overall , extremely happy with the camera, I’m sure it will improve even more in the future with further firmware updates. looking forward to making many more videos with it, well done all at Paralenz.

I mainly dive in dark, murky, green river water, so the use of cameras is usually flawed at best, but ever since the first dive ive been amazed by it. The color correction and the White balance make wonders in the vídeos, especially since im not very good at editing, so if its good out of recording the better. Every firmware launched has been an improvement, and the latest one with the EIS a major one. Overall i recommend this camera for the pros and also for the newbies like me.

Dived with the paralenz video camera for the first time in cape verde this month. All I can say is what a fantastic little camera, so easy to use, easy to change settings underwater, not that I really needed to, apart from turning the dcc white balance on and off when using a torch in those extreme dark areas, which wasn’t very often as it automatically adjusts brightness. Virtually no editing needed apart from a little trim of the videos after the dive. Connecting to my phone and sharing videos on social media was a dream and the way it puts all your photos and videos into a dive profile makes it easy filling out your log book, with what you have seen and where. I would highly recommend the paralenz to any diver

Overall a very good camera. Where it’s so small it doesn’t create any drag while mounted to a spear gun meaning you can track fish very easily. The menus are very simple to navigate and change as required and with the big Button they are simple to operate in gloves. With the automatic white ballance on it creates a very crisp picture that seems leagues above any other camera I have tried. With updates and software updates from the manufacturer the camera is constantly getting better and better. Overall very happy with the camera and very impressed with the quality of picture.

I received my camera in early Nov 2017. Pro’s: superb handling & very easy to use; no filters to mess around with; DCC is extremely good and improving with subsequent firmware updates; one thing that is absolutely clear is that owing to the DCC vs filters, correct colour presentation remains for both foreground and background (well done, Parlanez!), the results have been very good; Paralenz customner services has been extremely good. Cons: (not many). As with most early products to market, there have been issues. I believe that the latest 2 firmware updates have resolved many issues, now. When I contacted Paralenz, their response to the issues that I was experiencing with the camera was excellent. Vibration when taking a still can be problematic.

Hello, I try the paralenz in Red Sea last November. Superb place to try this in blue water… I confess… this is really user friendly diver’s camera!! easy to use, nicely done, small! and the results are really better than other sport cam (without any boxes or filters!) and no stress to go under the 30 meters deep during the dive… so.. great..
For pictures, It’s a little bit different… the results are .. not so good as expected. Taking a picture with this little vibration and in the full hand make that the results are not as sharp as they have to.. and the photo burst (that I try to avoid to push to take pictures), is too fast! 3p/s as minimum … it’s really too much… 1p/3s could be great… depending of what you want to take but… if you go for taking pictures, you need time (to approach the fish, .. avoid currents/drifts, .. ) so.. One good upgrade could be to have this option… like this, with a stick, it is possible to have (maybe) sharper pictures without filling your memory card to quickly.
Another thing is that I do not have find the way to download my diving profil on computer.. but i’m working on it ;o) … but still… IT’S A GREAT CAMERA especially for movies!!
I will try this in green Belgian waters asap…

Awesome dive camera that Can easyly be mounted on your camera housing, your mask-Strap, a Spear-gun or on a 3rd person viewer. With the depth controlled White balance for green or Blue water, Paralenz is way a head of other camaras like e.g. Gopro.

    23. Rated 5 out of 5

Color correction works surprisingly well in green water (I’ve only tried it in cold Canadian waters so far). This part of the product truly exceeded my expectations. The only issue is if you use color-correction and suddenly decide to use a flashlight, everything will be over-exposed.

I got mine from kickstarter and it was really buggy (it would freeze, record videos until batteries run out, etc). However, the latest firmware update fixed all of this, so in the end I prefer a camera that may not be perfect but can be updated for free instead of buying the next version! Remote firmware upgrade, a real must have that completely fixed my camera.

Another minor downside I find to this camera is the battery. It lasts long enough for now, but I’m afraid it won’t be like that forever. Not being able to replace it (or swap between dives) might become an issue in the long run.

Everything else is exactly as advertised : easy to use with bulky cold-water gear, haptic feedback is an awesome idea, settings are user-friendly, etc.

In the end I kept my gopro as a backup at the beginning, but now I’ve sold it. Paralenz is way better for a diver.

I have seen and used some other sport cameras for Diving and all of them fall short compared to the Paralenz. It takes the best features of other camera and rolls them all into one.
To have everything all together in one hand held camera is amazing. I am a member of the alpha testing and the camera has had some bumps, but the company backs it 100%, has fixed all the major issues and continues to implement new firmware to iron out more details.
The iPhone app makes it easy to log dives, shares the media and quickly show off what the camera can do. I highly recommend this camera to any diver looking for a small, compact camera to take along on their next dive.

Got one of these through kickstarter. Used it for a dive in thailand. Its easy to use, hardware and build seems great. However, software aspect seems to need work.
The colors flickered and changed abruptly in my dive videos. Another problem I encountered was that I tried to take a UHD video and the camera showed “video saved”, but the video was no where to be found on the SD card. Besides these problems encountered, I love this camera and it really has the potential to be the best out there. (Firmware version was 1.2.6 at the point when I used my camera, issues may have been corrected by current firmware.)

I have had one of the first test cameras and now have the final product. From the start my diving friends were very impressed with the overall quality and the quality of the videos and pictures. Now that the bugs have been ironed out it is an fantastic all round camera. Very easy to use and great software functions. I have used the testing camera in Australia great pictures and videos. The production camera I have used in Tenerife as well as the UK. It works great in all waters, the sea, lakes and quarries.

I bought my Paralenz in September and dived with it in Bali just prior to Agung making life hard for the diving industry around Tulamben and Amed. Initially the downloads of the media to my phone was slow, but with improved software and firmware, this has improved. My friends are impressed by the video I have downloaded and non-divers are interested in the colour at the displayed depth and temp. I look forward to more enhancements such as the auto On/Off feature and EIS which have recently been added

Okay, I have been skeptical but hopeful. Got one and it is wonderful. Pay attention to the blue or green setting. Also service was awesome. When customs was a problem they personally responded with a great answer and saved the day. Couldn’t be happier. Best Christmas present ever!
